Sneak preview of Panel’s on Global Sustainability Report

The advice of the Panels follows the mainstream line of thinking about desired outputs of the Rio+20 Conference.
The Panel’s vision concerning what needs to be achieved is “to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality, make growth inclusive, and production and consumption more sustainable while combating climate change and respecting a range of other planetary boundaries.”
The authors of the report expressed a need for concrete actions in three areas: empowering people to make sustainable choices, moving towards a sustainable economy, and strengthening institutional governance.
With regards to empowering individuals the report sets the following priorities:
eradicating poverty, promoting gender equality, advancing education, capacity building skills, creating employment opportunities, and providing universal access to food, water and energy, safety nets, disaster risk reduction and adaptation planning.
Transformation of the global economy, according to the authors of the report, would mean:
incorporating social and environmental costs in the pricing of goods and services, addressing market failures; providing incentives based on sustainable development criteria in investment and financial transactions; increasing finance for sustainable development and changing the way we measure progress and growth.
Finally, creating an effective framework of institutions and decision-making processes requires:
improving coherence and accountability, proposing a set of universal goals and, possibly discontinuing existing bodies and creating new ones.
