Seeds of biodiversity
At the festival, the importance of family farming for the defense of biodiversity was discussed, as were the main struggles and challenges for the free use of seeds. Farmers from different regions within the state of Rio de Janeiro presented their experiences in producing seeds and seedlings in diverse social and environmental contexts.
One experience shared was the use of urban agriculture to produce medicinal plants that drastically improve the lives of residents of densely populated urban areas. Another concerned the mountain region, where vegetable seeds guarantee quality agroecological production. Emotional and engaged testimonies were given by farmers who believe that seeds are the link between human labour and nature.
In more than 20 stalls, farmers and their organizations presented the strength of the diversity of family farming. The festival included a debate on the use of pesticides in Brazil, in which Gabriel Fernandes from AS-PTA participated. The festival was concluded in a workshop where farmers, advisory institutions and public institutions have committed to build a joint project for strengthening native seeds in the region.
