BioFach 2011 focuses on feeding the world
The World Organic Trade Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, brings together around 2.500 exhibitors - two thirds from abroad - and approximately 43.000 trade visitors from around 90 countries of the world every year in February, under the patronage of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and of the German Federation of the Organic Food Industry (BÖLW). BioFach also takes place on five continents with its own events in Japan, the United States, South America, China and India.
In Nuremberg, over 140 events will focus on different aspects, including catering, textiles and fair and ethical trade. However, the main focus of this year’s conference is geared towards one question. How can the food supply for almost 7 billion people be secured?
Unlike the mainstream food industry, the organic sector is certain: organic can feed the world!
Claus Rattich, member of NurnbergMesse, the management board that organises BioFach thinks that “unlike the mainstream food industry, the organic sector is certain: organic can feed the world! Expansion, mass production or genetic engineering are not the right way, but sustainable organic farming, a real pricing policy and a diet based on organically produced food.”
The exhibitors at the event this year are promoting a “green consumption”, as a way of providing alternatives to the often unsustainable habits and lifestyles of individuals. Furthermore, attendees find an international platform for discussing relevant issues on a sound professional basis, and are provided with a unique opportunity to network and develop combined future projects.
Copies of our quarterly, “Farming Matters”, are available on the Press Stand from Thursday 17th February.
