Valorisation de la diversité culturale

'Promoting Diversity' - Industrial agriculture threatens crop diversity through the promotion of hybrid strains over native varieties. This issue of AGRIDAPE looks at the importance of preserving indigenous crops and the associated traditional knowledge about the cultivation of these varieties ‘forgotten’ by modern agricultural research.

By focusing their effort on increasing the productivity of a few plants, modern agricultural research and development has led to a dramatic variety decrease of cultivated crops. As a result of this, food security now relies on a handful of species, which are commercialized at a global scale and available at a very low price but also vulnerable to pest outbreaks and climate disruption. This issue aims at highlighting the impact of a lack of diversity for small scale farmers and also the importance of the role of biodiversity in agricultural production and the global food system.
