Scaling Up and Sustaining the Gains-
We will review the development progress of sustainable agriculture in this, the last issue of the 25th year of LEISA. What actions have accelerated successful experiences? What hinders the diffussion process? Why is sustainable production becoming important? We will examine factors from various perspectives.
What shall we do to diffuse these successful experiences? How is it possible to coordinate between institutes, (or farmers organisations, governmental agriculture stations, individual enterprises, and NGOs)? What kind of policy drives/ obstructs the up-scaling of sustainable agriculture? How are these policies devised? Where do policy makers gain information? Are there any local cases which have successfully influenced the decision making of policy?

3 - 6written by Jorge Chavez-TafurThere is a growing recognition of the role small-scale farmers play when it comes to food production and food security. How can this be built on? Rather than asking "how to scale up", we should ask ourselves how to support the permanent innovation process that is small-scale farming.

7 - 8written by Jorge Chavez-TafurParviz Koohafkan is currently director of the Land and Water Division of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, FAO. His is a positive view: in spite of the difficulties that small-scale farmers face, they play a very important role in rural development, and this is increasingly being recognised. Their role will therefore become even more important – especially in the face of climate change.

9 - 9written by Ismail Stephen KimoleSocial and cultural factors need to be understood and respected when trying to get farmers to adopt new practices. One year on the job, extensionist Ismail Kimole observes with sharp eyes how critical this is, for projects to be able to sustain their gains.

11 - 12written by Nico Bakker , Félix Zenén Martínez MendozaIn parts of Mozambique, seed fairs have become an important tool for improving family farming and food sovereignty. The concept is simple: create a space for small farmers from different regions to come together to exchange seeds. Gaining access to (diverse) genetic material allows for new opportunities and ideas for reducing risk and increasing productivity on farms. But seed fairs also offer a way to value and strengthen farmers’ knowledge and local culture, as well as strengthening farmers’ movements. An inspiration to others to set up their own seed fairs!

13 - 14written by Mireille VermeulenWhen it comes to SRI (the System of Rice Intensification), scientists cannot seem to agree on exactly what makes it work, or even whether it works. This has not stopped farmers from widely applying the technique. Farming Matters looks at how SRI has become such a popular technique over the last 25 years, and what is stopping it from becoming an even greater success.

15 - 17written by Verina IngramHoney production is frequently promoted as a pro-poor income generation activity as it is accessible to many members of a rural community, has low start-up costs and requires little land or labour. But while apiculture (beekeeping) presents an opportunity for many African farmers, the potential to create a significant livelihood from selling honey often remains out of reach. Without access to a market and with limited transformation, the expected benefits do not materialise. These were the major issues considered by a small organisation in Cameroon, leading to results that were recognised by the SEED Awards.

21 - 23written by Chris ReijIn the mid-1980s, farmers and NGOs developed a technique to regenerate "forests on the farm" in dry areas in Niger. Now, millions of hectares have become greener and more productive. This African tale of on-farm forestry stands out for its simplicity and impact on farmers' lives...

Those farmers have very poor income and few economic activities due to the natural geographic conditions of steep slopes and barren soil. Local farmers make their lives by growing maize and rice on slopes and terraces irrigated by rainfall.
