Relocalizando os sistemas agroalimentares

The experiences in this issue of Revista Agriculturas (Relocating the agri-food systems) are part of a ‘third path’ in family farming, taken by local organisations in response to the globalisation of agriculture.

By constructing or revitalizing local markets, parts of the supply chain are eliminated, which benefits both producers and consumers. Profit stays within the region. In addition, local supply chains influence the balance of power in the market, giving local actors important roles in the development of standards and processes regulating production, processing, distribution and consumption of food.

The practical experiences in this issue are examples of initiatives that differ from the format of production, distribution and marketing of food that has become dominant in recent decades. They seek to reduce the distance between production and consumption of food.

Among other topics, articles cover value addition through family agro-industry, the method combining ecological fairs with other types of marketing, the role of farmers’ organisations in localising food systems, and the supply chain of regional artisanal fisheries.
