Acesso à terra e direitos territoriais

The articles in this issue of Agriculturas will show some of the ways in which family farmers' organisations, landless farmers, indigenous people and others resist processes of land grabs.

The struggle for access to land and security of territorial rights is a priority of the agroecological movement. The land issue is winning back an important place in the Brazilian political scene. Uncertainties created by the converging global crises of food, energy, environment and finances, have turned the interest of international investors to the land market.

In this edition, readers will find articles that reveal how the global race for land, known internationally as land grabbing, violates the territorial rights of peoples and rural and traditional communities. It highlights problems related to food sovereignty of nations and the accelerated deterioration of the environment.

This hunger for land takes on specific characteristics in Brazil, a country which is currently a supplier of agricultural commodities and minerals. This approach converts the natural heritage of Brazil into commodities, with enormous environmental and social costs. Instead, a focus should lie on giving impulses to authentic development. Concrete initiatives for the sustainable use and management of natural resources by family farming demonstrate the ability to reconcile economic, ecological and social objectives.
